Luke 4:42-44, Jesus Preaches in the Synagogues

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

At daybreak he departed and went into a deserted place. And the crowds were looking for him; and when they reached him, they wanted to prevent him from leaving them. But he said to them, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities also; for I was sent for this purpose.” So he continued proclaiming the message in the synagogues of Judea.

You can’t keep Jesus for yourself. I understand the importance of having a personal relationship with Jesus. I really do. But I get frustrated when that’s all people want out of him. “What can Jesus do for me?” “How can turning my life over to Jesus make my life better?” “Well, your life wouldn’t be so bad if you had a close, personal relationship with Jesus.” Honestly, I have a tough time with a lot of praise music because of it’s focus on “I” “me” and “mine.” My relationship with Jesus is bigger than that. It’s “we” “us” and “ours.” It’s a call into the world, an invitation into relationship with all of creation. Jesus wasn’t just sent to preach to our “city”—the people that follow a certain faith tradition or hold certain beliefs. Jesus was sent for the purpose of proclaiming the good news of God’s reign—a reign of love and justice for the oppressed—to all people, not just us. I need to let go of what I think Jesus can do for me, and ask Jesus what he can do for the world through me.

Where is Jesus calling me to action through our relationship?
