Luke 4:40-44, Jesus Heals and Casts Out Demons

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Demons also came out of many, shouting, ‘You are the Son of God!’ But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Messiah.

More demons and rebuking today. Is it any wonder that “demon” has become a word that means anything that plagues us in body, mind, or spirit? I suppose I could say that my disease of compulsive eating was a “demon” that had to be yanked out of me by divine intervention (which, at this point, appears to have happened, though I continue to work my highly disciplined 12-Step program with diligence every single day to keep it at bay). And so a case could be made that anything we do that we ought not to do (and anything we don’t do that we ought to do) is the result of some kind of demon or other. God’s love is the absolute best medicine there is. It’s really the only thing that can so transform us that the demons run for the hills. Jesus wielded that love with unparalleled skill, and still does today.

Where do I see God’s love in Jesus casting out “demons” in my life?
