Pretty sure Jesus wasn’t wearing one of those pairs of Groucho Marx moustache glasses. So why couldn’t good old Cleopas and his unnamed companion, who had ostensibly been following Jesus around for months if not years, recognize their old pal? I could come up with lots of theological musings as to why, but I won’t. I’m going a different direction with this one.

I wonder how well we recognize Jesus today? We, who have been following Jesus around for months, if not years? Do we recognize Jesus in the suffering child? The grieving acquaintance? The oppressed stranger? What about in the scared conspiracy theorist? The angry anti-masker? The overt racist? Can we make contact with Jesus in all these and more?

With questions like these to wrestle with, maybe it would be better if Jesus just wore the Groucho glasses.

When I look into another human being’s eyes, no matter who they are or what they’ve done, do I see Jesus?
