Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth . . .
— Luke 1:14

NL Daily Devotion for Monday, December 23, 2019

by Daniel D. Maurer, Clergy Stuff

I find it somewhat telling and definitely fascinating that the way God chose to save humanity came firstly through a little baby.

The wonder of the Christmas season reaches back into the very roots of our human psyche into the most primal relationship—that of mother and child.

Christmas, too, came with dirty diapers and sleepless nights. Scripture and tradition state that Jesus was a “good” baby though, meaning that he didn’t cry, but I don’t really believe that. If God were to be fully human, doesn’t that mean that a baby would be a “real” baby with poopy diapers and fussy cries at 3am?

Perhaps God is closer than we realize in the dirtier moments of our lives.

Reveal to me, O God, the true wonder of Christmas, that you come in all your glory through a little child. Amen.
