I must confess, I don’t recall having read this passage at all. And no wonder—it’s hardly memorable! Basically, Barak, this guy, comes to Deborah, a judge, and asks her for her favor. She tells him that it’s not gonna work out, but decides to go with him anyway.

Uh huh.

I think the most memorable part of this is that Deborah, a woman, was a ruler, a judge, over Israel.

It seems that all too often there are some who still think that women cannot be effective rulers (or judges, in this case, but same thing).

Well, here you have it. Right in scripture!

What happened? I’m not entirely sure. What does matter is that God provided a wise leader. It didn’t matter what gender the person was!

Women and men, you call, O God, to guide our paths. Guide them, too! Amen.
