John 14:15-31, The Promise of the Holy Spirit

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you for ever.

by R. M. Fergus, Clergy Stuff

I’m all about the Advocate. My core team at Clergy Stuff was hanging out once and one person said they were all about God the creator. Another person said they were all about Jesus. I laughed and said I completed the trinity, then, because the Holy Spirit is my fav. We literally can’t have faith without them (I’m trying to use they/them pronouns for God these days…bear with me). They’re solely responsible for my ability to comprehend scripture and figure out what it means for my life. They’re inspiration. They’re exuberance. They’re not just dancing a flame over my head but lighting a fire under my—well, you know. The Holy Spirit is God in my very being, vibrating my bones, filling my lungs, drawing me into a closer relationship with them and sending me out into the world to do and be God’s will and God’s work. Whew. I’m fired up just writing about this. Yep. I’m all about the Advocate, my friends.

Which person of the Trinity do I feel most connected to and inspired by?
