Job 5, Misery Just Is

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

For misery does not come from the earth, nor does trouble sprout from the ground; but human beings are born to trouble just as sparks fly upward.
— Job 5:6-7

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

God does not cause misery. It doesn’t come from God’s beloved creation, which includes humanity. Misery just is. Too many people still think, as Job’s friends insisted, that bad things only happen to bad people. That if you just love God enough, you won’t have any problems or pain. That if you are experiencing challenges in your life, you just need to pray harder, or maybe you don’t really have enough faith.

This turns God into an abusive parent. It blames the victim for things they have no control over.

The truth is that bad things happen, and God is there, suffering with and for us, sitting with us in whatever is going on, embracing us in limitless love.

What hurts can I bring before God, knowing that God hurts with me, and holds me in love?
