Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
“As long as my breath is in me and the spirit of God is in my nostrils, my lips will not speak falsehood, and my tongue will not utter deceit. Far be it from me to say that you are right; until I die I will not put away my integrity from me.”

It’s hard to have integrity in the face of suffering. When people say terrible things about you that aren’t true, when they behave in hurtful ways, it’s such a challenge not to lash out in response. To do back to them what they have done to you, to find ways to hurt them out of your own hurt.
Let Job be an example to us. His life was utter crap, and his friends were bent on convincing him it was his own fault. Yet he never succumbed to the temptation to sacrifice his own integrity in an attempt to make his suffering make sense.
Our world is full of suffering that makes no sense. We must continue to speak truth, continue to have integrity, and stand up in the face of challenge. We are not alone—God is with us in the midst of all of it.
God, remind me that your universal truth does not waver, and give me the resolve of Job in the face of my suffering.
