Job 2:1-13, Job Loses Property and Children

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord, and inflicted loathsome sores on Job from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. Job took a potsherd with which to scrape himself, and sat among the ashes.
— Job 2:7-8

NL Daily Devotion for Monday, June 8, 2020

by Daniel D. Maurer, Clergy Stuff

When I was assigned writing for this daily devotional, I never knew what the next month might hold for readings. Clergy Stuff’s founder, Dr. Kimberly Leetch, takes the Sunday readings for the Narrative Lectionary, and then expands the readings for the daily devotional.

How ironic (and appropriate in these stressful, pandemic-ridden days), that Job is making the rounds in congregations using the Narrative Lectionary this month (May, 2020).

Job, too, would lose everything. Workers and millions of people around the world losing their jobs, their homes, their hope that someone will swoop in, à la superman in deus ex machina fashion, and end everything going on. We want the world to be normal again.

One misconception is that the world is normal. The world is NOT normal. Humanity is facing more than the issues related to this pandemic, but also nearly insurmountable problems like climate change, zillions of tons of plastic in the oceans, massive overpopulation and widespread poverty.

Like Job, I believe we are called not to curse God, but to reflect on this time why “business as usual” perhaps isn’t the best forward for our children, and, indeed, our species.

God, help me to reflect on my suffering, that I might more closely follow you. Amen.
