Jeremiah 30:1-24, God Will Restore Israel and Judah

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Thus says the Lord: I am going to restore the fortunes of the tents of Jacob, and have compassion on his dwellings; the city shall be rebuilt upon its mound, and the citadel set on its rightful site. Out of them shall come thanksgiving, and the sound of merrymakers.
— Jeremiah 30:18-19a

God’s people had really messed things up. Wholesale rejection of God’s most basic commandments—caring for the poor and marginalized—in favor of the accumulation of wealth, and of great spectacles of religious observance. Sound familiar? Does to me. Of course, the consequences of Israel’s behavior were dire: death, destruction, exile, and subjugation by foreign powers.

Yet in spite of it all, God has compassion. God’s love knows no bounds, and God has mercy on those who deserve it least. God promises restoration and joy to those who deserved as good as they got. Let that be a word of hope for all of us in the time ahead.

Gracious and merciful God, restore me to joyous life in you. Amen.
