Jeremiah 1:4-19, Jeremiah’s Call

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

“Then I said, ‘Ah, Lord God! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy.’ But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not say, “I am only a boy”; for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord.’”
— Jeremiah 1:6-8

All of us feel inadequate sometimes. Or maybe I can only speak for myself. I just know that there have been times in my life when I have been faced with a task that I felt wholly unqualified to carry out. Like being a mom. Yeah, especially that. And then being a mom to special needs kids. I don’t care how many parenting books or classes or blogs or other resources you consult. No one is every fully prepared to bring a child into the world and raise them to adulthood, whether that child is neurotypical or not. And I’ll tell you, now that my kids are 24 and 26, that I really made a mess of it sometimes. And it’s still okay. God was with me every step of the way, encouraging, supporting, and (thankfully) forgiving. Also, I’m still a mom, and I always will be. So I need God’s continued promise to equip me and accompany me for whatever tasks lie ahead.

Are there places in my life where I feel unqualified? Where is God in the mix?
