Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
NL Daily Devotion for Tuesday, January 7, 2020
by Daniel D. Maurer, Clergy Stuff
Why is it that the only socially acceptable places to sing are: 1) in church, 2) when you’re expected to like at a concert, or; 3) when you’re in the car or the shower?
When I lived in Germany, I remember several times where we would sing something in class while at school. And it wasn’t in choir class, either. It was studying German poetry and several of them were songs. All the rest of the kids (Germans all) sang without embarrassment. I remember feeling self-conscious, not feeling comfortable, as if everyone would listen and judge my singing.
But that didn’t happen.
Culturally, it was a different understanding of song, and it was much more acceptable.
Try singing in public this week and sing a song of joy. See what happens!
