It’s Thanksgiving Day in the U.S. How appropriate to have this text about abundance, not necessarily of food—it’s not literal fruit—but of justice. The Bible frequently talks of God’s people being called to “bear fruit,” and agricultural metaphors like this one—take root, blossom, put forth shoots—abound. It was something God’s people could relate to in their agrarian society.

On a holiday that’s all about gratitude, we would do well to look at all the ways we are rooted and grounded in God’s love, all the ways we are nourished in the Holy Spirit, and all the ways we are called to bear fruit in serving our neighbors.

What am I grateful for today? How can I turn my gratitude into action on behalf of others?
