Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
“Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.”

Why is there all this talk of blood, blood, blood in the Bible? Perhaps it has to do with sacrifices requiring blood to be spilled.
Today, many of us don’t connect with the substitution theory of atonement which states that because Jesus gave his blood, we don’t have to. Although many of us use the language that “Jesus died for me,” we certainly don’t believe that God would not have granted us salvation had Jesus not given himself as “sacrifice.”
Hebrews has much good in it. Yet, perhaps with these difficult scriptures is a case in point when we must place the conclusions safely in the past and addressing only the context in which they were originally written.
What do you think—is blood “necessary” for your salvation?
