Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
“But Jesus has now obtained a more excellent ministry, and to that degree he is the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted through better promises.”

When I think of heaven, I think of the end of The Last Battle by C.S. Lewis, when Aslan is taking his friends to newer, brighter, better Narnias one after another crying, “Higher up and farther in!” The original Narnia was astonishingly beautiful in every way, and yet here, at the end, it is more beautiful, more… Narnia.
Also beautiful was God’s covenant with God’s beloved people. The covenant was based on promises of land and offspring, which really meant that God would provide all things and the people would thrive and flourish in relationship with God and one another. Yet Jesus ushers in a better covenant still, not described in terms of land and offspring, but still promising our eternal flourishing in our relationship with God and one another, a time when we shall all know God and God’s Word will be written on our hearts.
Higher up and farther in!
God of promise, draw me in to relationship with you, that I may have life and have it abundantly. Amen.
