Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
“So then, a sabbath rest still remains for the people of God; for those who enter God’s rest also cease from their labors as God did from his.”

I love a good nap. There’s something delicious about working hard and then allowing myself to curl up and relax. God gets this about God’s beloved people, and so models for us the importance of rest.
Still so many of us live lives of constant busy-ness—overworked, over-committed, over-scheduled. We are bombarded by phone calls and texts and emails even as we run from place to place on our tight schedules, ever trying to cram in just one more thing. Again and again, we fail to heed God’s command to remember the Sabbath day. Sabbath isn’t just about going to church for a couple hours before running off to the next commitment. It’s a day of rest, which so few of us actually observe, and because of this, we deprive ourselves of a basic human need to be still and connect with our loving, nurturing God.
God’s rest is a promise for us, something beautiful and wonderful, a gift to be received with gratitude.
Life-giving God, invite me into your promised rest that I might be refreshed and restored in your presence. Amen.
