Hebrews 13:7-19, Service Well-Pleasing to God Part II

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls and will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with sighing—for that would be harmful to you.
— Hebrews 13:17

Another aspect of serving God, and living within that very service is that each community requires faithful leaders and followers.

I never liked the word “follower.” It seems that, in today’s world, society praises the leaders and doesn’t even acknowledge the followers. Followers are seen as “mindless” sheep, wandering the verdant pastures without any care or awareness of what’s going on.

The truth of the matter couldn’t be further.

Followers are to question leaders. Challenge them. Make sure that they are doing their jobs.

Good followers also know about obedience—which is in itself not a very popular word in today’s lingo.

But without obedience, there can be no community. Obedience doesn’t have to be blind to be a good thing.

In all, guide me to obey your precepts and follow within your promises, O God. Amen.
