Hebrews 13:22-25, Final Greetings

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, bear with my word of exhortation, for I have written to you briefly.
— Hebrews 13:22

NL Daily Devotion for Saturday, August 17, 2019

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

Briefly! Ha! I’d hardly call this a little note. Thirteen chapters dense with dire warnings and powerful visions of hope. But the writer appeals to us to bear with it, to not skip ahead to get to the end.

I remember sitting in church as a kid and being so happy when we started saying the Lord’s Prayer because it meant the service was almost over and I could run downstairs for coffee cake and tea. It’s tempting when wrestling with something as provocative as Hebrews to want to gloss over the middle parts. But God’s Word, even when it challenges us, even when we flat-out disagree with it, is not to be missed. God is always to be found in that struggle, always inviting us to seek to learn, to know more about who God is and who we are in relationship to God. I mean, coffee cake is great and all, but I think I’ll take a deeper understanding and connection to our most awesome God.

How has reading God’s Word drawn me into closer relationship with God?
