Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
“Now, discipline always seems painful rather than pleasant at the time, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.”

Discipline isn’t necessarily physical punishment. It is any system of training that corrects or molds character. That doesn’t make it any less painful at times. Discipline means going against ingrained patterns of behavior, and that causes friction.
As an undisciplined person, by nature, I don’t like to try and try again. I’d rather give up than experience the pain of pushing through difficulties. Yet at those times when I ask God for the discipline I need in a certain area of my life, and follow through in spite of the pain, I am always rewarded with serenity and the assurance that God is with me.
Where can I ask God for discipline in my life, that I might better love and serve God?
