“Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son”

Main Idea: God still speaks to us. We can listen for God.
God has spoken to people in many ways over the centuries. In days of old, God spoke through the ancestors—Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. In those days these “fathers of the nations” were in direct communication with God individually, listening and speaking to God and for God.
When Israel became a mighty nation of twelve tribes, God spoke to the people through prophets. Not fortune tellers, but people chosen to listen to God and to relay what they heard and interpreted to the people.
Over the years people stopped listening to the prophets (or God stopped speaking to and through them), until one day it became necessary for God to send a voice that people could not refuse to hear. God sent God’s own son, Jesus, to be a voice for the holy and to interpret the things of God in radical and life-altering ways. Some chose to listen; some chose to ignore.
Two thousand years later, we still have the privilege of hearing God’s voice through Jesus, through God’s words spoken in the Bible, and through the faithful people who listen and speak truth to us. We can choose to listen, or we can choose to ignore.
In this very loud world, it may be necessary that we must work even harder than our ancestors to drown out the noise, so we may listen for God’s voice. It may be that we must develop practices that allow for quiet (physical silence or mental/emotional space).
We may need to learn how to listen to a voice of truth in a very distracting and misguiding world. What does God say to us when we listen?
