For you need endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised.

In the immortal words of Queen, “I want it all and I want it now.” Growing up I thought I ought to be able to do anything I wanted to perfectly on the first try. If I couldn’t, I just gave up. The ideas of endurance, perseverance, persistence…incomprehensible to me.

Jesus’ followers had to have endurance. Those early Christians were bringing Christ’s call to sacrificial love and service into a hostile world. They were arrested, beaten, killed, driven out, and otherwise made miserable. But they knew what they had to share was of far more value than even their lives.

Christ’s call to sacrificial love and service is as radical today as it was two thousand years ago. Persisting in doing the will of God in the face of forces that want to distort or discount that message takes endurance. The writer of Hebrews tells us to not shrink back in our efforts. God is with us.

Empowering God, keep me on the difficult path, safe in the knowledge that you walk beside me in all things. Amen.
