Genesis 24:28-49, Choosing of Rebekah

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

I am standing here by the spring of water; let the young woman who comes out to draw, to whom I shall say, ‘Please give me a little water from your jar to drink,’ and who will say to me, ‘Drink, and I will draw for your camels also’—let her be the woman whom the Lord has appointed for my master’s son.

And suddenly, there she was! I love how unashamedly specific Abraham’s servant was in asking God for what he wanted. It’s almost laughable. Except… well, um… I actually made a list of exactly what I wanted in a partner when I was ready to start dating again in 2023. Ten things I wanted, compatible with the things about myself I would not compromise. I looked at that list and didn’t know if I should laugh or cry. This person clearly did not exist.

Except he did. And he was only the second date I had. Honestly, two years later I still sometimes wonder how on earth it was even possible. How he actually exceeded my list in ways God obviously knew I needed when I wasn’t even aware of them. It’s insane. I’m not someone who puts much stock in stories of God answering prayers like a wish-granting fairy. I really don’t think that’s how she works. But sometimes… well honestly it’s kind of hard to explain it any other way. Regardless of exactly what happened and how it happened, I spend every day grateful for this amazing gift in my life. And if nothing else, it makes a good story!

When has something wonderful happened for me that I honestly cannot logically explain? Do I believe God “made” it happen? Why or why not?
