Genesis 1:1 – 2:4, Created in God’s Image

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

Let that sink in. God created humans—male and female—in God’s image. So God is male and female. Not either/or but both/and. Therein lies the very beginning of a dialog about human sexuality and gender in which it’s utter foolishness to claim that such things are set one way and any deviation from what the majority claims as “normal” is to be rejected as if God rejects it.

How can God reject God’s Self? Or anyone created in God’s image?

I won’t go on a long rant about my own theological beliefs and how they inform my thoughts about the LGBTQ+ community. I’m pretty sure you can guess what they are. Instead, I’ll just encourage you to think about your own ideas about God and sexuality and gender in light of this simple verse.

What would it mean if God were nonbinary? Would it change how I interact with others? How I see myself?
