Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Everyone has burdens. That’s just life. At the moment, I am dealing with some serious challenges in my personal life, and what I am aware of most of all is that I can’t get through this alone. As a human being, I was never meant to face difficulties by myself. We are created to be in community. As I have walked through the past few weeks of upheaval, I have leaned into my various communities in important ways. Pastoral counseling, therapy, my recovery community, dear friends, loving family. I am surrounded by people who love and support me and it has made all the difference. Each of these people, from my Lutheran pastor to my atheist brother, are fulfilling the law of Christ, being as Christ to me, sharing my place and loving me in my suffering.

Unfortunately, not everyone has the kind of support I do. Our call as the body of Christ is to reach out to anyone who is suffering, to offer to bear their burdens with and for them. We find when we do that our own burdens become lighter.

Is there someone in my life in need of my love and support right now?
