Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

The party continues! Not only has the temple been rebuilt and dedicated, God’s people are once again allowed to celebrate their most holy festival in their own city, in God’s new and improved house. They get to remember as a community how God led them out of slavery in Egypt and brought them into their own land. And how much more poignant when they have returned to this promised land a second time! This renewed celebration of the Passover was a proclamation of the Israelites’ identity as God’s people.
In a few days we celebrate Christmas, when we remember the incomprehensible gift of God coming and living among us as a human being in Jesus Christ, when God meets us where we are, inviting us once again into divine community with God and one another. In the midst of the societal call to material excess at this time of year, may we remember to claim and proclaim our identity as beloved children of God.
How does my celebration of Advent and Christmas remind me of who I am and whose I am?
