Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
“Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Say to Aaron, “Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the earth, so that it may become gnats throughout the whole land of Egypt.’”

Before you get all bent out of shape . . . yes. Yes I do know that the image above is of a mosquito and not a gnat! It was the closest free image I could find to insert into this daily devotional for the Narrative Lectionary.
When you think of all the plagues that God could have thrown at the Egyptians, I think that this one has to be the most insidious. If you’ve ever suffered a hot, sultry, humid day outside with hundreds of gnats circling your head, well . . . let’s just say that I know you understand.
The interesting connection between all the plagues God placed in front of the Egyptians was to show just how stubborn and unwilling the Pharaoh was willing to be in letting Israel go.
The sticking point for me is thinking that God God’s-self was the one that made Pharaoh so hard of heart.
Now there’s a whole devotion topic to write on for another time.
God, sometimes my worries feel like gnats circling my head. Focus my life on you to give me purpose and direction. Amen.
