Exodus 20:1-21, The Ten Commandments

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God.
— Exodus 20:8-10a

NL Daily Devotion for Saturday, October 10, 2020

Yesterday we heard about Jethro telling Moses to rest. And once again, the voice of God is heard through the voices of the people around us, if we are open to listening. Because here God is commanding us directly that at least one day a week, we have to rest. After all, even God rested when creation was complete.

There is an added dimension to the Sabbath that is beyond just rest, however. The seventh day is a Sabbath to God. Which says to me that an important part of resting is spending time with God, spending time in community with others in celebration of God’s love and presence. For me, this means participating in a worshipping congregation, though that might not be what it looks like for everyone. No matter how you stop to spend time with God, know that doing so is deeply restful and recharging.

How do I spend time resting with and in God?
