Nothing beats a great potluck dinner after worship on Sunday. It seems to me that potluck dinners comes as close as we can in the modern world to compete with the early Christian “love feasts” they celebrated as part of their worship in the past.
Meals have always played a part in cultural religious celebrations. Take any culture, anywhere, at any time, and history shows that meals were a big deal, not only in secular life, but also in the religious practices of the time.
I think this shows God’s genius in connecting with human beings in the simplest ways possible. And it also shows that a simple breaking of bread is one sign to show that God is among us.
God, remind me to reach out to you before I share a meal with family and strangers alike. Amen.
