Exodus 12:33-42, The Exodus from Rameses to Succoth

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

That was for the Lord a night of vigil, to bring them out of the land of Egypt. That same night is a vigil to be kept for the Lord by all the Israelites throughout their generations.

I love the special festivals and observances of my religious tradition. Lighting candles for All Saints, the bare altar at Good Friday, joyful carols at Christmas, the cry of “Christ is Risen! He is Risen Indeed!” at Eastertide. These are so much more than repetitions of meaningless symbolic action just to carry us on an emotional roller coaster for our own enjoyment.

God has always called God’s people to rituals of remembrance. When God led the people out of slavery in Egypt, God commanded them to observe these things so that they would never forget God. Today, when we re-enact moments of God’s incredible power and love in human history, we are intimately connected to God in our lives now. We can never forget what God has done for us!

How do the traditions of my faith community keep me connected to God’s action in human history and in my life now?
