Ephesians 3:20-21, Paul’s Prayer

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

I used to have someone in my life who was negative. If I got excited about something or had an idea, they would say, “That won’t work,” or come with a million reasons why it was ridiculous to even contemplate. When I would tell them their negativity was hurtful to me, they would say, “I’m not negative. I’m just being realistic.”

I’m not saying you shouldn’t do your due diligence if you’re planning a new venture. But for crying out loud, don’t quash your exuberance before it even has a chance to make things happen! Our God is a creative God, and being created in God’s image means we get to create, too, whatever that looks like in our lives.

Just as we shouldn’t limit ourselves, we shouldn’t—and can’t—limit God. With God’s help, our halting efforts at bringing love and service into the world can explode into something truly astonishing.

Am I talking myself out of some undertaking God is calling me to because I’m afraid it’s not possible?
