God calls us to share what we have.

It can be really hard sometimes - many of us know what it is like to run out of supplies at a party, and many know what it’s like to run out of money or food or other resources.

The fact that we know how frightening it is to run out of resources causes us to make choices that are, well, sometimes selfish.

If we gave too much away, we would run out of our own stuff, right? We have to look out for ourselves!

We have been taken over by “scarcity” thinking - and it can have a negative impact on how we view and treat others in need.

The Scarcity Theory, designed by Chuck Frey, shows how people can start thinking that there is never enough - not enough resources, not enough prestige, not enough love - if someone takes some of the limited amount of whatever resource we are talking about, that makes it harder for you to get those things!

The idea is to change your way of thinking to a mindset of abundance - there is always more where those resources came from.

God seems to operate on the abundance theory - if we can trust that there will be more where our resources came from, perhaps we can be more generous with the gifts we are given!

Narrative Lectionary Daily Reading:

2 Kings 4:42-44

A man came from Baal-shalishah, bringing food from the first fruits to the man of God: twenty loaves of barley and fresh ears of grain in his sack. Elisha said, “Give it to the people and let them eat.” But his servant said, “How can I set this before a hundred people?” So he repeated, “Give it to the people and let them eat, for thus says the Lord, ‘They shall eat and have some left.’” He set it before them, they ate, and had some left, according to the word of the Lord.
