In my youth, I used to love to go into the woods. I haven’t done so recently because, at least in Minnesota in the summer, the threat of Lyme’s Disease is so very real, and very, very difficult to avoid no matter how many precautions a woodsman/woman takes to rid the zillions of ticks crawling on hikers’ legs.

Anyway, I remember first when my Boy Scout leader first taught me how to use a compass and a map. I remember asking him why we needed a compass at all, when we had the map in the first place.

He responded, “You can do that, but you’ll wander off. A map is never enough. The compass keeps you going in the right direction.”

That, I believe, is a good approximation of God’s ways for us, as given in scripture. The key, though, is using the tools we’re given to stay on track. And that isn’t always easy—especially when the ticks of the world are out there crawling around!

Enlighten my soul with your guiding hand, O God. Amen.
