Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
“For ask now about former ages, long before your own, ever since the day that God created human beings on the earth; ask from one end of heaven to the other: has anything so great as this ever happened or has its like ever been heard of? ”

God claims us. Yet, each of us belongs, not by what we do, but because of whose we are.
I continually need to remind myself that God has chosen me to be part of God’s family.
As modern Americans (or any other first-world nation), we don’t like to hear that we didn’t have a choice in the matter. But isn’t it true? We did not choose our own existence. We didn’t choose our parents and we certainly didn’t choose to hear about God’s family. Many of us are simply born into it.
Being claimed doesn’t have to be something we feel guilty about, though. It can simply mean that we have a connection to the rest of our family. At times, the rest of the family can be difficult (as it was undoubtedly for the Israelites!). The gift, though, is that we belong and we will always belong. We have a family and we are not alone.
Thank you, God, for making me belong. Help me strive to live up to my heritage in you. Amen.
