Daniel 2:1-49, Nebuchadnezzar’s First Dream

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face, worshipped Daniel, and commanded that a grain-offering and incense be offered to him. The king said to Daniel, ‘Truly, your God is God of gods and Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries, for you have been able to reveal this mystery!’

If you haven’t read the whole passage in a while (or ever), it’s totally worth reading this time around. The link is up above for the Oremus Bible Browser online.

It’s not just that today’s daily reading for the Narrative Lectionary is my namesake, either. The story is really good. Not least of which is the King’s insistence that the dream interpreters not only give him an accurate interpretation, but first repeat to him the dream he had!

It’s totally unreasonable!

The King’s assistants, in their panic, find one who can give not only an accurate interpretation, but also first recite the very dream that the King of Babylon had had.

Personally, I’m a very active dreamer. My wife often tells me of her amazement that my dream recall is active as it is. Most people, I have found, don’t remember their dreams night after night. Probably good, too—dreams are weird!

The great thing about today’s story is that Daniel shows the King of the power of the One, True God. The dream itself isn’t all that amazing, nor is its interpretation. But Daniel shows that God alone has power and knows the experiences of everyone. That includes you, you know, too . . . right?

O God, you show your power to me daily. Guide me to open my eyes to see your great works, and that you hold me in your great hand. Amen.
