Amos 5:18-20, The Day of the Lord a Dark Day

Alas for you who desire the day of the Lord! Why do you want the day of the Lord? It is darkness, not light.

This makes me think of all the recent doomsday prophecies. All the folks who said they calculated the exact date and time of the end of the world (12/21/12 anyone?). Plenty of people are loudly vocal about all the sin and evil in the world and how God is going to come down and end it all because of them. But none of the people claiming such things count themselves among the sinners. They think they’re the chosen ones who are going to be raptured out of the chaos. I think they need to think again.

All have sinned and fallen short. Without exception. All are in need of God’s grace and mercy. And shouting with glee about how God is going to violently destroy all the people you don’t like isn’t the gospel. It’s wishful—and evil—thinking.

What do I think the end of the world will be like?
