Acts 8:4-25, Philip Preaches in Samaria

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

But Peter said to him, ‘May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain God’s gift with money! You have no part or share in this, for your heart is not right before God. Repent therefore of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, if possible, the intent of your heart may be forgiven you.

Today’s daily reading from the Narrative Lectionary devotional deals more with a mistake Simon the magician made than it does Philip preaching in Samaria. Philip evidently had made an impression on a local hero who had performed great signs. In fact, they were so great that his brand of magic was even labeled as GREAT™!

Simon was then impressed by the apostles and requests (with a bag of silver he handed behind his back) that he, too, be given the powers that he had seen with the apostles.

Nope. Wasn’t gonna happen. Peter rebukes him.

This, incidentally, is where the sin of simony comes from. Simony in particular was alive and active as a sin during the middle ages when aristocrats tried to buy church offices for their kin.

Needless to say, Simon repents, the preaching goes on, and everyone seems to have learned their lesson.

Right?

Maybe not!

Lord, may your gifts be bestowed to those whom you need, not to the rich and powerful. Amen.
