Acts 4:23-31, The Believers Pray for Boldness

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

And now, Lord, look at their threats, and grant to your servants to speak your word with all boldness, while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.

The threats were real. The council had let Peter and John off with a slap on the wrist and a promise not to talk about Jesus anymore, and they took this as a challenge. They knew the could be arrested, imprisoned, or murdered for their refusal to comply, and this was all the more inspiration to move forward.

It makes me think about the thousands of brave folks who acted in the Civil Rights movement, who faced all of these risks and more. It makes me think about the thousands of folks now who continue to protest for racial justice and climate justice (which are inextricably connected) and who endure these same risks even now.

The struggle is not over. Those in power will always threaten, slander, imprison, and murder those who stand up to their injustice. May we, with the believers way back when, pray for boldness in working for God’s justice.

Where have I been bold in my actions on behalf of others?
