If only I had been able to internalize this message sooner.  I grew up thinking that if I wanted to be successful in something, I'd better be the best at it while I was young. You always here those stories about 9-year-old composers or 5-year-old drummers or 6-year-old calculus masters that are beating everyone in their field — clearly, to live your dreams, you must be the best early on.

When I was 26, I hadn't achieved any of my spectacular dreams — I wasn't a famous artist or actress, I wasn't a famous singer — heck, I wasn't even acting or singing for fun.  I figured my hopes of doing what I loved were over.

I thought my time to have dreams expired . . . only to start acting, writing and making short videos when I turned 34.

Youth is a beautiful time of sometimes frivolous fun, but it's also when we learn the hard lessons that make us who we are.

Contrary to popular culture, youth and physical beauty don't make us interesting; having lived through the tumult of our youth gives us a richer and more colorful presence. Each year of experience only enhances who we are and what we have to offer this world — so cherish each year, each line and each gray hair — you have earned them, and you only get better with age!

Narrative Lectionary Daily Reading:

Ecclesiastes 11:9-10

Rejoice, young man, while you are young, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth. Follow the inclination of your heart and the desire of your eyes, but know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment. Banish anxiety from your mind, and put away pain from your body; for youth and the dawn of life are vanity.
