Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
“David danced before the Lord with all his might; David was girded with a linen ephod. So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet.”

I can’t read this without thinking of the movie Footloose. Not a great flick, honestly, but an 80’s classic nonetheless. In a town where the conservative Christian leadership has forbidden dancing, a teenager quotes this passage as evidence that dancing is okay in God’s book. It doesn’t work, of course, but he tried.
What the kid didn’t say was that David was basically dancing around in his underwear, so ecstatic was he about bringing the ark of the Lord into his city. David’s wife found it shameful, but he shut her down, swearing he’d do even more questionable things if it gave honor to God.
What I take away from this is that when we really, truly recognize the incredible power and love of God, we can’t help but respond in the most un-self-conscious fashion, oblivious to what other people think of us. We ought never apologize for praising God with everything we are. So let that be, perhaps, a challenge to myself and those in my sometimes staid denomination who seem so uncomfortable erupting in spontaneous praise! J
Inspiring God, may I praise you with all that I am! Amen.
