1 Samuel 8:1-18, Israel Demands a King

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

And in that day you will cry out because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves; but the Lord will not answer you in that day.

Be careful what you wish for. Israel demanded a king, and God said, “Fine, but you’re not going to be happy about it.” At which point, Samuel goes on a long diatribe about all the terrible things a king will do to make everyone’s life miserable. And the people respond, “We don’t care. We want a king anyway. Everyone else has a king.” Sigh.

So they got Saul. And he was a complete disaster.

We can all get drawn into wanting what we see other people have, thinking it will make us happy. But how often to we get what we think we want and find out it really wasn’t all it was cracked up to be? Aren’t we, then, putting our faith in human things rather than in God, just as the Israelites did?

What does it look like to let God rule in our lives, instead of seeking after people and material things?
