1 Kings 2:1-12, David’s Instruction to Solomon

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

‘I am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, be courageous, and keep the charge of the Lord your God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes, his commandments, his ordinances, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, so that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn.’
— 1 Kings 1:2-3

Parents love to give their children advice. The fact is that we have more life experience than our kids. We’ve done the stupid things they haven’t done yet, and we’re hopeful that we can keep them from repeating our mistakes. News flash: we can’t. Even King Solomon, considered the wisest of Israel’s kings, turned away from God in his later years, marrying non-Israelite women and worshipping their gods.

Truly, the best we can do for our kids is pray for them. If they come to us for advice, we can give it, but we can’t make them follow it. We can’t make their choices for them, or take their consequences. Parenting young adults makes me feel more keenly powerless than almost anything else in my life. And on that note, let me change my mind about the first sentence in this paragraph. Truly the best thing we can do for our kids is love God and live our faith openly, and pray for them. Because when they see what God does for us in our lives, they know where to go when they need help, even if they choose not to.

Gracious God, make me an example of your active love and presence, that I might inspire my children to reach out to you for the only advice that really matters. Amen.
