1 Kings 19:11-18, 2 Kings 9:30-37 – Elijah Meets God

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

[A]nd after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence.
— 1 Kings 19:12

What does silence sound like? This passage from the Hebrew Bible has always appealed to me. Mostly because Elijah’s experience in meeting God comes through that vast silence.

If you’ve even been to the rural prairie or spent time in the desert at nighttime, you know the eeriness conveyed in those moments.

Yet, there is something holy, something altogether different about a presence within the apparent void of presence.

I guess it has a bit to do with the fact that God works in the quiet corners of the world. We are bid to look — and listen — for that God, not within the noise or the clang of the world, but within the soft, tender care of a mother comforting her child. Or perhaps in a quiet household, late at night, when others have gone to bed.

Silence does not mean the absence of the Infinite One; it simply means that God is present in ways that we sometimes cannot perceive.

Where do you experience God the most?
