1 Kings 16:24-34, Ahab Reigns

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Ahab did more to provoke the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel, than had all the kings of Israel who were before him.

This is, of course, why God never wanted to give Israel a king in the first place. Human beings are just not cut out for the job of ruling over one another. We are far too subject to our own petty agendas, far too enamored of power and wealth. Ahab, like his father and grandfather, felt no need for God, and encouraged the people to worship other gods instead.

Today, we still are drawn to worship money and material goods, fame, youth, self-indulgence and comfort. Our rulers and political, social, and economic systems encourage this.

We need to be reminded regularly that God is not pleased with this course of action. We need to be reminded that God is the only legitimate authority for my life, and that we are called into divine relationship with God, and into loving service to others. It’s as simple as that.

Gracious God, never cease to remind me that you are in charge. Amen.
