1 Corinthians 2:1-5, Proclaiming Christ Crucified

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

My speech and my proclamation were not with plausible words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.

I love the humility in this. It’s so easy for people who are well-spoken or powerful writers to take credit for those they’ve convinced or converted to a specific way of thinking. Or for people to give them credit. I’m guilty of this, too. There are certain preachers or writers I find I deeply resonate with, and I give their opinions more weight than others to the point where I sometimes disregard certain people, assuming in advance they have nothing important to say to me.

But in fact, God speaks—God speaks—through all different kinds of people, and I ought to be looking not at the person but at the “demonstration of the Spirit” so that my faith “might not rest on human wisdom, but on the power of God.” I need to open my ears, my mind, and my heart to anyone who is speaking of God and allow God to reach me as God will. Sometimes I’m surprised!

When have I heard God speak through an unexpected person?
