A God Who Knows

I find it interesting that my printed Bible titles this text, "The Inescapable God," as if God's all-seeing eyes are something to be escaped. Sure, I can see where this text might seem creepy except that it's God we're talking about here, not some stalker-predator. So, maybe instead of fearing this all-knowing presence, we can embrace the gift of an all-loving God.

In my most important relationships, our depth of love has only come through vulnerability. By becoming vulnerable, opening myself to taking the risk of letting someone know me completely (as completely as another person can), only then does the relationship move to a deeper, more authentic place.

Many years ago, I met a woman that seemed to be of like mind. Our kids were in the same kindergarten class and at the same in-home daycare. After a long week one Friday, I invited her and her daughter over to wind down for the weekend. We got to talking, and it was love at first tired-mom moment. It wasn't long before we were having lunch together regularly. We started each lunch with prayer, and as we ate, we shared our deepest secrets and our darkest shame. And when each new revelation was met with compassion and support rather than judgment, we gained the courage to share even more.

Twenty years later, we are still best friends. We know everything there is to know about each other. When I was in the hospital for appendicitis, she answered the doctor's questions about my medical history. And I preached at her ordination because I knew just how much she already loved the congregation she was being called to. Having someone know me -- the real me -- is a gift I hope everyone has the opportunity to experience.

Whether or not there is a human out there who knows you inside and out, you can be sure there is a God who does. Our God knows all of us -- the good, the bad, and the ugly. And we are met, not with judgment and isolation, but with compassion, companionship, and love. 

Narrative Lectionary Text: Psalm 139:1-6

To the leader. Of David. A Psalm.
O Lord, you have searched me and known me. 
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
   you discern my thoughts from far away. 
You search out my path and my lying down,
   and are acquainted with all my ways. 
Even before a word is on my tongue,
   O Lord, you know it completely. 
You hem me in, behind and before,
   and lay your hand upon me. 
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
   it is so high that I cannot attain it.
