The Gift of Community

Narrative Lectionary Daily Devotions written by Kace Leetch from Clergy Stuff.

community

As great as Boaz had been to Ruth, Naomi knew that her safety and security on a day-to-day basis was dependent on the women she gleaned near. Alone, a woman would be vulnerable. Together, they could protect each other.

Friends (colleagues, acquaintances, squad -- whatever you call your group) can be one of the greatest gifts a person will ever have. People who got your back. People who are there for you. People you can give your whole self to. These are the people God gives us that become our community. And, since we were created to live in community, it's well worth the effort to maintain your most important relationship. Who might you reconnect with this week?

Narrative Lectionary Text: Ruth 2:21-23

Then Ruth the Moabite said, “He even said to me, ‘Stay close by my servants, until they have finished all my harvest.’” Naomi said to Ruth, her daughter-in-law, “It is better, my daughter, that you go out with his young women, otherwise you might be bothered in another field.” So she stayed close to the young women of Boaz, gleaning until the end of the barley and wheat harvests; and she lived with her mother-in-law.
