Microscopic Ginormousness

"What are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them?" I have a problem sometimes staring up at the night sky. The vastness of space makes me feel very, very microscopic, and I feel invisible to a God so mighty that can can behold all the universe in a single gaze. I have learned that there's a garbage heap the size of Texas floating in the ocean somewhere. My mind cannot comprehend how large the ocean must be if we can lose a garbage heap the size of Texas in it. I get anxious considering just how very insignificant I am in comparison to all these things.

But then I remember that a God who sees the vastness of the universe in a single gaze can see me, too. God can be as big as the whole universe, but God can also be as small as a human, and can stand face to face with me when I am in desperate need of a face-to-face with God. Remarkable! I will never know why God has chosen to become accessible to little ol' me. But I'll take it. Thanks, God!

Narrative Lectionary Text: Psalm 8

O Lord, our Sovereign,
   how majestic is your name in all the earth! 

You have set your glory above the heavens. 
   Out of the mouths of babes and infants
you have founded a bulwark because of your foes,
   to silence the enemy and the avenger. 

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
   the moon and the stars that you have established; 
what are human beings that you are mindful of them,
   mortals that you care for them? 

Yet you have made them a little lower than God,
   and crowned them with glory and honour. 
You have given them dominion over the works of your hands;
   you have put all things under their feet, 
all sheep and oxen,
   and also the beasts of the field, 
the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea,
   whatever passes along the paths of the seas. 

O Lord, our Sovereign,
   how majestic is your name in all the earth!
