Early Christian Communities

In the early days of the church, being a follower of Christ could have been a lonely endeavor. If you've ever had a change of heart about something that your closest friends feel passionately about, then you might have a glimpse into what life would be like for a Jew (or Gentile) who suddenly seemed to turn their back on their faith to follow a cult. They would have greatly concerned their friends and family. Many would turn their backs on them.

But the early Christians weren't alone. They had recently been converted in such numbers (3000), the community of faith was set up to thrive. These early believers did everything together. They worshiped in the temple together. They ate together. They even pooled all their money and resources and shared it among themselves so none would be left behind. It was likely as close as anyone has come to the kind of community God envisioned for humanity upon its creation.

Do we have such communities today? I think we do. Ideally, our churches are such communities. Addiction communities are, too. Both of these encourage being together, working, living, or studying together. Sharing our resources with each other. Encouraging and lifting each other up. What community does these things for you?

Narrative Lectionary Text: Acts 2:43-47

Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.
