Mysteries of the Deep

Sometimes I think about the pioneers who explored vast, uncharted countrysides, and I lament that there are no more uncharted countrysides to explore. With our tech, photography, and satellite imagery, we can view every inch of land on our planet. Some explorers have turned to the stars for further exploration. And yes, exploring space is an incredible, amazing, miraculous endeavor.

But we're not done with earth just yet. There's a huge, widely unexplored ecosystem right at our doorstep. The ocean, which covers 2/3 of the earth's surface, largely remains a mystery. With each new technological advance, new images of the deep emerge, shedding light on even more of this unbelievable creation given as a gift by our loving creator. The psalmist lauded the mysterious deep. And today, we still stand in awe of its hidden wonders. To celebrate the mighty ocean, here's a peek at a few of the recently discovered miracles of the deep, deep ocean.

Narrative Lectionary Text: Psalm 104:24-26

O Lord, how manifold are your works!
   In wisdom you have made them all;
   the earth is full of your creatures. 
Yonder is the sea, great and wide,
   creeping things innumerable are there,
   living things both small and great. 
There go the ships,
   and Leviathan that you formed to sport in it.
