A God Who Loves

Narrative Lectionary Daily Devotions written by Kace Leetch from Clergy Stuff.

God's love for us

This was a radical idea at the time of Jesus. People were taught from childhood how to love, respect, revere, and fear their gods. It was quite foreign to envision a God or gods that loved people more than they expected people to love them. But this is God's promise. We have a God that hopes for, but does not demand our reverence or respect. God models what God wants from us by loving us unconditionally. God's love shows us the path to love. We are able to love deeply because we have a God who loved us first.

Narrative Lectionary Text: 1 John 4:7-10

Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.
